Return to Corbin's Bend Page 10
“Okay, only two more,” he assured. “You’re doing very well, Violet, I’m proud of you.”
That seemed to help her gather the strength to straighten her legs in preparation for the final two strokes.
Thwwwaaap! The pain now spread like wild fire. She quickly rattled off the next thing on her list wanting to get this over with now that she was almost done.
She felt the cane tap against her butt as if Charles was estimating his final stroke. Seconds later the last stroke blazed with a final thwwwaaap against her bottom. She cried out her last item and collapsed against the chair. She felt Charles’ arms around her and then he scooped her up and carried her over to the couch holding her and rocking them both. She grinned up at him through her tears and laughed despite her pain. “I’m not sure who the caning hurt more, me or you,” she teased.
He groaned, flashing a sheepish smile. “Please don’t make me do that again.”
“I won’t. I promise,” she assured and then snuggled into his chest.
“Rise and shine.” She heard the words drifting into her dream. “I made pancakes and bacon,” he sang, almost tempting her to open her eyes. It wasn’t until the decadent scent of coffee and the savory bacon he spoke of drifted in after the words that she rallied herself to open her eyes all the way.
“Mmm.” She smiled, sitting up. “You didn’t have to make me breakfast in bed.”
“I know. I wanted to,” he said as he snatched a piece of bacon from her plate.
She inhaled the coffee deeply before taking a sip. Heaven in a cup, she thought. That’s when she noticed a manila envelope sitting among the food on her tray. “What’s this?” she said, pointing to the envelope.
“Open it.”
She pulled a stapled stack of papers free of the envelope, running her eyes over the cover letter curiously. She cocked her eyebrow. “You’re offering me a job?”
“Not me personally, the firm I work for had an opening I thought you might be interested in. I remembered your history working on the city beautification projects and that you used recycled materials. Then I remembered that you hold your MBA and couldn’t think of anyone who would be more perfect for this long term project, so I put a word in for you. Now,” he said, holding up his hands, “there’s nothing here that says you have to take this job. I just wanted to give you the information for you to at least consider. If you want to stay at your old job, that’s fine too. All the details are in there,” he said, gesturing to the papers in her hands.
Her eyebrows flew up when she saw the amount the job would pay. “That’s a lot of money, more than I’m making now.”
“Mmm hmm.” Charles nodded, taking a sip of his own coffee. “Our firm has been hired by the state of Colorado to provide sustainable statewide cleanup and beautification, and they are willing to pay a pretty penny from a fund they have set aside for exactly this. If you take the job, you’ll be paid well. You would be expected to organize the projects and keep track of which funds go where which is right up your alley. It sounds to me like it’s going to be a pretty permanent position and you’ll be able to do most of it from home while having the opportunity to travel to be as involved with the actual projects as you would like.”
She took her time reading over the rest of the paperwork. Finally finished, she set the papers down. She was silent for a moment as she thought. “Charles, this is my dream job.” She was a little awed that it was being handed to her in this way. “Are you sure it’s legitimate?”
“I checked it out myself,” he assured her.
“Well then.” Violet needed no time to make up her mind. “I would be a complete fool to pass it up.” She laughed, jumping up into his lap almost knocking her tray over in the process. He grinned back at her pulling her into an embrace. Then reaching back, he pulled something out from under a pillow behind his back. The breath got caught in her lungs as he presented to her a little black box opened to reveal the most beautiful ring she had ever set eyes on.
“I know it’s a little soon, but I have no doubts. Violet, I fell in love with you the moment I saw you. You are the best thing that has ever happened to me. Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?” he asked, slipping the elegant ring from the box.
Emotion swelled in her throat as she looked into the eyes of the man with whom she felt more herself than she had her entire twenty-six years before him. “Yes!” she shouted, tears of joy spilling down her cheeks. “Yes, I’ll marry you,” she said, bowling him over with a quick kiss, “on one condition.”
He froze, worry creasing his brow. “Name it, anything.”
She laughed full of glee. “I want a full Corbin’s Bend wedding just like we talked about. I want every member of the community as a witness, and I want you to “spank the bride” at the end.”
He chuckled, his eyes dancing with mirth. “Done,” he said, slipping the ring over her finger and pulling her into the deepest most meaningful kiss she had ever experienced.

Chapter 1
Excuse me, lady?”
Kirsty felt a gentle shake on her shoulder pulling her back into consciousness. She opened her eyes, not recognizing at first the taxi or the taxi driver who had driven her here from Denver. But as the last traces of sleep melted away, it all became clearer.
The taxi driver had leant in through the open back door, obviously trying to wake her while touching her as little as possible. “Sorry,” Kirsty mumbled, embarrassed, wondering how many times he’d had to call her before resorting to shaking her awake. Oh god, had she been snoring? It was entirely possible.
“You’re here,” he said. “379 Heather Drive, Corbin’s Bend. This look right to you?”
“I suppose it must be,” said Kirsty, stretching and stepping out of the cab. She had seen photos of her new house, but she hadn’t seen it in context before that moment. She was unprepared for how many identical looking houses there would be. The place looked like it had been constructed from Lego by a particularly unimaginative child.
Still, her own home! Kind of. And a new beginning five thousand miles from East London. The Rocky Mountains were visible behind the housing development and Kirsty had to admit, they looked pretty darned incredible. This was going to be a new start. A new life. She was finally here after the months-long application process. She was finally a member of the world’s only housing development specially built for spankophiles.
Kirsty could hardly wait. Well, maybe she could wait just a little. Until after she’d had a sleep, at least. It was three o’clock in the afternoon Mountain Time which meant it was 10 p.m. UK time. Kirsty wasn’t sure what time she was currently operating on. Get-some-sleep-before-she-collapsed-in-a-heap time, probably.
The taxi driver opened the trunk of the cab and removed Kirsty’s bags. She was certainly traveling light. One large suitcase and her hand luggage. She didn’t have anything further to come. Anything else from her little London fla
t would have cost more to ship over than it would to replace it. She had a week’s worth of clothes, a laptop, a big empty house and her bank card. It was a start.
Kirsty paid the taxi driver and checked her phone as he drove away. She had messaged her mentor, Kelli Stevens, to let her know she was on her way and she now saw that she had texted back while she was sleeping. “Can’t wait to meet you! On my way over now.”
She hoped Kelli wouldn’t be too long as she wasn’t quite sure what to do with herself now. She couldn’t even get into her new home until her mentor arrived with the key. Luckily, she only had to wait a few minutes before she saw a smartly dressed motherly-looking woman whose red hair was graying slightly at the temples come round the corner. As soon as she saw Kirsty, she started waving enthusiastically.
“Hi there!” she said. “Oh my, you look exhausted, honey. Let’s get you inside. Is this all your stuff?”
“Yup. This is it,” replied Kirsty, hoisting her rucksack onto her shoulder and dragging the suitcase by its handle behind her.
Kelli opened the front door for her and then handed Kirsty the key. “So this is it,” she said. “Your new home.”
Kirsty’s first impression was that the place was massive. She could have fitted the whole of her London studio flat in here several times over. Kelli led her on a tour of the open plan lounge and kitchen and pointing out the pantry and laundry room and bathroom before taking her through to the bedroom. Kirsty tried to answer all Kelli’s chatty questions and nod her head in the appropriate places but really she was dead on her feet. The answers she was giving Kelli could be total gobbledygook for all she knew.
All Kirsty wanted to do was sink into an unconscious slumber. She needed to switch off.
Apparently Kelli could see a problem with that plan. “So you haven’t got a bed yet? When is your furniture getting delivered, Kirsty?”
Kirsty shrugged. “I haven’t sorted anything out yet. I need to buy some stuff. I’ll get on to it tomorrow.”
“Where are you going to sleep in the mean time? Would you like to stay over at mine and Lelo’s? We have a spare room you can use.”
“No. Thank you,” said Kirsty quickly, aware through her fug of tiredness that her response may have come out more forcefully than she had intended or than was polite.
“Well, you can’t just sleep on the floor. Tell you what, we’ve got a camp bed at home. You can borrow that and some bedding until you’re more settled. Give me twenty minutes and I’ll be back.” Kelli bustled off.
Kirsty was leaning against the bedroom wall. Keeping her back against the wall, she slid down into a sitting position with her legs bent in front of her. She rested her head on her knees. She wished her new mentor wouldn’t fuss so. This is perfectly comfortable she thought as she fell immediately asleep.
She was awoken by a hand gently tugging on her shoulder. This is getting to be a bit of a habit in this place, she thought groggily.
“Hi Kirsty, honey. Just wanted to let you know that your bed’s all set up now. You might be a bit more comfortable in there.”
Kirsty looked around blearily and then got to her feet. Her mouth felt like it was full of cotton balls and she was pretty certain an indentation of the seam on her jeans was imprinted across her face. She wasn’t sure how long she had been asleep for, but it was evidently long enough for Kelli to have set up the folding bed in the room and made it up with pillows and sheets. She had even provided a bedside light which she had set up on the floor next to the bed. “Thank you,” she said. “I’m sorry. I should have helped you with that.”
“Don’t be silly. You’re obviously exhausted. My husband Lelo brought a few things over. Now you get some sleep and come find me when you’re awake enough to face the world. I can introduce you to Corbin’s Bend. My address is in your welcome pack.” She left the room shutting the door behind her.
The newly made-up bed looked so inviting that Kirsty could barely bring herself to clean her teeth before she clambered into it.
She forced herself to fetch her toothbrush and toothpaste from her bag and padded through to her shiny new bathroom. Cleaning her teeth and washing her face removed some of the grittiness that had built up over the past twenty-four hours of traveling. She couldn’t be bothered to do any more though. A shower would have to wait until she’d had some sleep. She took off all her clothes and donned a t-shirt and a fresh pair of panties and finally, blessedly crawled beneath the crisp sheets. Her brain happily switched itself off entirely.
She awoke feeling more refreshed than she had in a long while. She had absolutely no idea what time it was. She wasn’t entirely sure what day it was.
Her jeans were lying on the floor where she had dropped them and, without leaving the comfort of her bed, she managed to grab hold of one of the legs and drag them towards her so that she could fish her mobile phone out of the pocket.
It was seven in the evening Colorado time. Which meant it was two o’clock in the morning London time and probably breakfast time in whatever personal time zone she was currently operating on.
Still, she figured, you were supposed to adjust to local time as quickly as possible when you travelled to a new country, weren’t you? That meant that it was Get-up-and-check-out-the-Corbin’s-Bend-nightlife time. Let’s find out what people do with themselves for fun of an evening, she decided.
She threw open her suitcase, scattering clothes and underwear across the floor as she looked for her towel and shampoo. Time to try out the impressive looking shower in her shiny new bathroom.
Half an hour later, Kirsty was washed, dressed and heading out the door to find out what – if any – nightlife Corbin’s Bend had to offer.
Kirsty wasn’t sure what to expect from Corbin’s Bend. Moving to the world’s only spanking-based community had been her dream for over a year and after the months it had taken for her application to get approved, she could hardly believe she was finally here at last.
She briefly considered popping in to see her mentor. She had noticed on the way out of her house that Kelli had left her a selection of groceries in the kitchen including a box of cereal, milk, bread and fruit. It was incredibly kind of her and Kirsty knew she really ought to go and say thank you, but seeing her mentor would probably involve coffee and advice, and what Kirsty really wanted at the moment was beer and fun. Kelli could wait until tomorrow.
She found what she was looking for after a short walk. A restaurant called Amore with a wide picture window overlooking the street. It looked cheerful and inviting, so she headed towards it hoping it would be okay if she just had something to drink without eating anything. She didn’t really feel up to food at the moment.
When she got inside, her heart lifted at the sight of a little bar complete with bar stools, bowls of peanuts and a decent array of spirits on display. Kirsty sat down on one of the bar stools and waited to be served, people-watching as she did so. The restaurant area looked fairly busy. At least half the tables were occupied with couples and families, chatting and laughing and enjoying impressively large pizzas and bowls of pasta. A few people looked up and smiled at her as she looked around.
Kirsty vaguely wondered if she was breaking any rules of propriety at Corbin’s Bend by sitting in a bar on her own. During her Skype interviews before her residency was approved, Brent Carmichael the president of the housing board had warned her that plenty of people in Corbin’s Bend had ‘quite old-fashioned views’. Apart from knowing that this might include spanking their wives for purely disciplinary purposes, Kirsty wasn’t really sure what this would entail.
Still, the middle-aged woman who came over to serve Kirsty looked anything but disapproving. She was a short stocky woman with thick black hair and a wide smile.
“Hi there!” she said. “What can I get you?”
“Just a beer, please.”
“Any particular kind? Coors? Budweiser? We got plenty of local beers round here. You ever try an Upslope Craft Lager? They brew it over in Boulder.”
/>
“That sounds great. Upslope, please. You know what they say ‘When in Rome…’”
“That’s the spirit,” she chuckled as she took a can out of the fridge. “You’re the new girl from England, I’m guessing? I’m Marie.”
“That’s me. My name’s Kirsty. Thanks,” she added as she took the beer can that Marie passed to her, opened it and took a sip.
“Do you need a glass with that, Kirsty?” asked Marie.
“Nah, I’m good.”
“You want a table for dinner?”
“No thanks. Just the beer,” Kirsty replied.
“Okay, then. You give me a shout if you need anything.” With that, Marie bustled off through a door at the back of the bar area which Kirsty guessed led to the kitchen.
Kirsty sat for a while sipping at her beer contentedly. It was pretty good.
She looked up as the door opened and three guys entered the restaurant. Kirsty looked at them, appreciatively. Wow. Corbin’s Bend obviously had some pretty impressive eye-candy on offer.
First to enter of the group was a well muscled man with very short brown hair, followed by a tall thin man with soft blue eyes. The third guy to enter was definitely the cutest. He had light brown hair which was attractively mussed in a way that suggested that an owner didn’t care about the way it looked rather than someone who spent hours in front of a mirror artfully mussing it. He had a slightly crooked nose and a lopsided smile and the warmest, most beautiful eyes that Kirsty had ever seen. They were the color of melted milk chocolate. She could happily stare into those for hours, she thought. He was impressively toned and casually dressed in a faded t-shirt, jeans and hiker boots.
As it always did, Kirsty’s gaze shifted from the men’s faces to lower down their bodies and settled at around hip level. Whenever she checked guys out – even if she was just passing them in the street – her eye was always drawn here. She was looking at their belts.
